Silver Award project: Busy-board sand kitchen

Vivienne and Samantha from Troop 65686 in Littleton built a sand kitchen for the toddler playground at Abiding Hope’s Nature School to bring more nature to their play space.

The sand kitchen play bench for toddlers was made to encourage creative play with sand, water, and other curious interactive elements. We designed this sand kitchen to help the toddlers of the Nature School meet their sensory needs, with textures of sand, water, bristle brush, and a patch of fake grass. We also added busy board features like latches, hooks, spring door-stop, and washers on a rod that dance and spin as they drop.

We used reclaimed natural cedar wood from a demolished deck set out for disposal, which not only helped reduce cost but gave the wood a second life. Cookie proceeds helped purchase the hardware, features, and kitchen play set. Using power tools for the first time was intimidating but we are now much more confident and this experience helped us towards earning our Woodworker Badge. We hope the kids of the Nature School can enjoy playing with this kitchen for many years to come.
